Amazon just hosted its annual hardware event—yup, it’s already that time of year when Amazon unveils new products. You can now preorder almost all of them if you like to be right on top of the trends, and while some are brand new designs, others are redesigns of pre-existing, popular Amazon devices.
All new devices, Amazon
Take the Echo Dot (3rd Gen). Arguably Amazon’s most popular product, the Echo Dot is in millions of homes, whether bought on its own or as part of a bundle. Well, the Dot you know and love is gone. It’s a sphere now. Think Echo Dot + Echo Spot and you basically have the newly remodeled Echo Dot. It’s kind of dumb, so why on earth do I want it?
Amazon also introduced a slew of new Ring products, though those aren’t available for preorder just yet (we’ll add them when they are live on Amazon). The big—and weird—announcements in the new devices are a drone (yes, really a drone to fly around your home), a Car Cam, and a Car Alarm.
New Echo Devices
All-new Echo Dot (4th Gen)
Since it’s new, this will work faster than your current 3rd gen (or, *gasp* 2nd gen) Echo Dot. Other than a face lift, it seems to be the same product. The all-new Echo Dot is available in three colors: Twilight blue, charcoal, and glacier white.
All-new Echo (4th Gen)
Like the old Echo, this is the Echo Dot… but bigger with slightly better sound quality. It’s also available in the same colors as the new Dot.
All-new Echo Dot (4th Gen) Kids Edition
They couldn’t forget the kids! Kids need cutesy patterns for their technology, obviously. Plus, expanded parental controls.
All-new Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen)
The brand new Echo Show actually moves. It has auto framing to keep you front and center while you’re video chatting with friends and family. This has the biggest screen so far of any Echo Show, with a 10″ x 10″ screen.
New Fire TV Devices
All-new Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote
Amazon is claiming this is 50% faster than the last model of the Fire TV Stick. The new model also comes with Dolby Atmos on select titles. But if you don’t have a soundbar, I can’t promise it will sound much different.
Fire TV Stick Lite
This is the older version of the Fire TV Stick, is it not? This model looks identical to when the remote didn’t include volume buttons. Who thought volume buttons were so cumbersome, they needed to be removed and make a product cost $10 less? Amazon is marketing this as the budget-friendly Fire TV Stick.
New Eero Devices
Introducing Amazon eero 6 dual-band mesh Wi-Fi 6 router
If you know home mesh systems, you most likely know more about Eero than I do. This is the new one, with coverage for up to 1,500 sq. ft. with WiFi speeds up to 900 Mbps.
Amazon eero Pro 6 tri-band mesh Wi-Fi 6 router with built-in Zigbee smart home hub
While this model has coverage for 2,000 sq. ft. with WiFi speeds up to a gigabit. Say goodbye to dead spots and buffering, at least, that’s what the product description tells me.
Brand New Amazon Devices
A lot of the products released are just new additions or remodels to existing Amazon devices. The Luna controller is entirely new (but kind of looks like many other gaming controllers). The controller was designed specifically for Amazon’s cloud gaming service. It has Cloud Direct technology (all-new Amazon buzzword), which lets you easily switch gameplay between PC, Mac, Fire TV, iPhone, and iPad. This is an exclusive, invite-only product.
