Learning how to use all the features on your camcorder, including shutter
speed
, will make it much easier to take professional looking
videos. These techniques will also give you a firm foundation on which
to build and improve your skills. These skills are very useful and will
make your video look as good as a professional’s.

Adjusting the shutter speed makes it possible to capture videos of
fast moving or slow moving objects. It’s important to learn how to
change the shutter speed just in case you need to film anything which
moves quickly. If you don’t correctly adjust the shutter speed, and you
try to record anything that moves quickly, then you will find that the
video will be a blur.

Step 1: Learning the Basics

The first thing that you need to do is learn about shutter speed so
that you can actually understand what it does. Shutter speed doesn’t
really apply to video cameras. It’s a term inherited from film
photography. Shutter speed literally means the amount of time that your
camera’s shutter will stay open. This will affect how much light can
enter the camera.

Step 2: Overriding Settings

Almost every single camera supports the option for you to override
the shutter speed. Most will use manual shutter speeds which can be
between 1/60 to 1/250 of a second. These speeds generally work fine in
normal conditions, however, you might need to override the settings in
some situations.

Step 3: Reading the Manual

Every single camera will work slightly differently. To find out how
to adjust the shutter speed, you must read your camera’s instruction
manual. This will tell you which buttons to press and how to set the
right shutter speed. The process is normally fairly simple, although it
will be easier if you read through the manual.

Step 4: Menu

Open the menu by pressing the relevant button on your camera.
Normally there will be a button which says “Menu” on it. Once you are in
the menu, you should find the option to adjust the shutter speed. This
is sometimes hidden away in the Settings menu and might take some
finding. If you read through the manual beforehand, then this really
shouldn’t be a problem.

Step 5: Adjusting Shutter Speed

Now adjust the shutter speed as much as required. This is normally
very easy and can be done by moving a slider up and down using two
buttons. Just remember that he faster the shutter speed is, the less
light will make the video. The slower the shutter speed, the more light
will enter.

Step 6: Testing

Now start filming as you normally would. It will then be easy to play
back the footage and decide whether or not you’re using the right
shutter speed settings. The shutter speed will need to be adjusted every
time you film in a different environment.

If the videos are too
dark, then this could be because the shutter speed is too fast and not
allowing enough light in. To use very fast shutter speeds effectively,
there must be plenty of light available.
