Garyn Hammond, 31, a Detroiter with a following on YouTube, died April 14 as a result of COVID-19 complications at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.
He was the youngest of four siblings and was described by his mother, Betty, as a loving and caring young man who looked out for his family. She referred to Hammond as her miracle child because she was affected by health issues while she was pregnant with him. Doctors didn’t expect him to survive.

He loved to repair computers and cars and mow his lawn. In recent years, he acquired a following on YouTube under the name Battery Geek. His videos include computer advice and reviews and demonstrations of everything from generators to solar flashlights.
He was his mother’s protector, even until the last days of his life when he told her: “Mom, I’m going to beat this. I’ll be all right.” Hammond pleaded for her to stay home during his illness because it was too dangerous for her to see him.
“It’s still very hard for me to accept that my baby boy is gone,” Betty Hammond said.
