Fixed focus lenses can be used in camcorders and digital
cameras. These are a much cheaper type of lens than zoom lenses and are
technically inferior. This lens does not move to magnify the picture;
instead it is fixed in position. Even if your camcorder does have a
fixed lens, then it doesn’t actually mean that it won’t have any form of
zoom. Quite often these camcorders offer digital zoom which won’t be
quite as good as optical zoom.

If you are purchasing a camcorder, then it’s important to know the
difference between fixed focus and zoom lenses. If you already have a
fixed focus camcorder, then you need to take a look at the different
steps required to take great videos.

Step 1: Planning

First, you need to choose what you are going to record and how it is
going to work. You will need to give this some thought so that it’s
possible to consider lighting and the camera location.

With lighting, you need to ensure even lighting so that the picture
is clear enough. You must, however, ensure that the background isn’t too
light because this could cause the film to be overexposed. Unlike a
zoom camcorder, you will need to choose the location of the camera much
more carefully.

Step 2: Preparation

When you have decided what you want to record, you should then
position the camera and aim it where you want to record. Line everything
up and make sure that you can see everything you want on the camera.
Mount the camcorder on a tripod, as this will make it much easier to
keep the camera stable and prevent any blurred images. It will also make
it easy to rotate the camera and choose what you are recording.

Step 3: Zoom

A fixed focus camcorder does not feature optical zoom. This, however,
isn’t really an issue because it does have digital zoom. With most of
these cameras, it’s not possible to adjust the digital zoom midway
through recording. Set the zoom now, but make sure that you don’t use it
too much because it will affect the quality of the recording. Digital
zoom does not really zoom anything. Instead, it crops the picture and
makes the subject look larger.

Step 4: Recording

Once everything is set up, you can then press the record button to
start filming using your fixed focus camcorder. This is a very easy
thing to do and you can move the camera around. When moving the camera,
you should be careful and move it slowly. This will prevent blurring and
affecting the quality of the video.

Step 5: Second Attempt

Remember that you don’t need to record everything at the same time.
Actually, it is much easier to record segments of the video separately.
This will make it much simpler to piece everything together without
worrying about making mistakes.

Step 6: Download to PC

Once you have all the segments of video, you should download them all
to your computer. This is normally done by connecting to firewire or
USB.

Step 7: Editing

Load the video clips into a video editing application, such as
Pinnacle studio pro. It’s possible to drag the separate clips down onto
your timeline and organize them. Make any edits if required to make your
video look much more professional.
