LA CROSSE, Wis (WKBT) – For our local HAM radio operators, a local organization just got a large new toy.

The Mississippi Valley Amateur Radio Association is having an open house to show off its new Mobile Communications Unit.

The Mobile bus will act as an emergency unit to help local governments and their response teams by filling in gaps in their coverage.

It will also act as an educational tool to teach kids about radio technology.

The group hopes to create opportunities that others may not usually get to experience.

“Not only is it fun, but there’s a lot of varied interest in H.A.M radio. We’re the only federally licensed group of experimenters that are encouraged to experiment,” said Craig Goldbeck, the president of the MVARA.

The Mobile Unit was first used when the group participated in the National Field Day in June.
