Samsung will, allegedly, announce a rollable smartphone at some point in the future, but not anytime soon. This information comes from NOT DJ Koh, who is not exactly a regular source for such information, so take it with a grain of salt.

Samsung may announce a rollable smartphone, but not in 2020 or 2021

He mentioned, on Twitter, that the company is working on a rollable display. However, that display is not coming in 2020 or 2021, he notes. That basically means we won’t see a smartphone with such a display in the next year either.

He also added that the company is developing a multifold display, and that it will launch before a rollable one. That means that we may get a multifold foldable smartphone at some point in the future as well.

Multifold displays could open up various new possibilities for smartphones. A regular-sized smartphone could expand into a large tablet thanks to such a display. It would be quite a chunky phone when folded, though.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is quite an appealing piece of hardware, and yet it’s quite heavy for a phone. That’s not exactly surprising considering what you’re getting here.

A multifold smartphone would be heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 2

The multifold smartphone would probably be heavier, but not double the weight of the Galaxy Z Fold or anything of the sort. The only added weight would be brought by a larger display, which would have two fold points (or more), instead of one.

If the company does end up releasing such a phone in the future, it would probably be a part of the ‘Fold’ family, but have an interesting new name. The company’s rollable phone will probably launch as part of a whole new lineup of devices, if it ever sees the light of day.

Now, speaking of rollable devices, LG will probably announce one in H1 next year. The company already teased its rollable smartphone, which will follow the rather interesting LG Wing smartphone. We don’t know anything about that rollable phone yet, but stay tuned.
